Tickets for this event can be purchased online here for $30. Oahu’s MMA scene has been a little scarce for the last few years. UFC106

Thursday, October 8th, 2009

9730-ortizgriffinTito Ortiz won’t have to wait until Mark Coleman is healthy to make his return to the Octagon. The former light heavyweight champion will keep his scheduled return date of Nov. 21 at UFC 106, as he rematches another former champion in Forrest Griffin.

The bout was confirmed by Yahoo! Sports’ Kevin Iole on Thursday, citing UFC president Dana White as the source.

Ortiz will return to action nearly 18 months to the day he last stepped foot in the Octagon, dropping a unanimous decision to current 205-pound king, Lyoto Machida.

Since his exit from that fight, Ortiz flirted with several organizations after having back surgery to repair injuries he had been dealing with for years. In the end, Ortiz and UFC president Dana White put an end to their longtime feud, and the “Huntington Beach Bad Boy” re-signed with the promotional giant.

Just days ago, Ortiz lost his original opponent as Coleman dropped out of the fight due to a knee injury. The former champion was boastful about staying on the November card against another fighter.

In steps Griffin, who will see his first action since a devastating knockout loss to Anderson Silva in August.

Holding a 2-2 record in his last four fights, Griffin hopes to get back on track and also gain a measure of revenge. When he last fought Ortiz, at UFC 59, he came out on the short end of a split decision loss.

The bout will serve as the co-main event of the evening, which will be headlined by UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar defending his title against Shane Carwin.

Rich Chou

Congratulations to my friend Rich on his recent endeavor with Strikeforce! Rich was one of the first people I met when moving to the Islands in 2004 back when he was slinging shirts for Fokai. You can also spot Rich as he’s always helping out the Penn’s and can catch him usually interviewing BJ from time to time. Good luck Rich!

Rich Chou has been hired by Strikeforce to serve as the world championship mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion’s first-ever official matchmaker.

Chou comes to Strikeforce with 10 years of experience in the MMA business. During his tenure in the sport, he has functioned in the same capacity with two other organizations and worn a number of other hats including that of competitor and referee.

“It is an honor to have the opportunity to work for a top organization like Strikeforce,” said Chou, who will be responsible for creating matchups between fighters for Strikeforce’s monthly events that air live on Showtime as well as for the promotion’s live debut on CBS on Saturday, Nov. 7. Before the acquisition of Chou, Strikeforce had relied on a committee, headed by CEO Scott Coker, to create its matchups.

“Strikeforce has done some incredible things over the course of the last few years to emerge as one of the world’s premiere MMA promotions. They have a deep roster of world class talent so it’s going to be very exciting and a lot of fun to be able to put together highly compelling matchups for their events.”

The 30-year-old Chou graduated from Pepperdine University in 2001 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Communications and Business Administration. During his college years, he began training in the fighting discipline of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Shortly after commencement, Chou relocated to Honolulu, Hawaii, with the intention of becoming a professional mixed martial artist. He went on to compete in numerous grappling tournaments as well as in one professional MMA fight and referee over 100 MMA bouts in Hawaii.

In 2004, Chou was hired by promoter J.D. Penn, the brother of MMA superstar B.J. Penn, to assist with the growth of J.D.’s “Rumble on the Rock” series of MMA events and to spearhead all matchmaking efforts for the promotion. Chou played a similar role with EliteXC between 2007 and 2008.

Chou will relocate from Honolulu, Hawaii to Strikeforce’s headquarters in San Jose, Calif., to assume his new position.
